Date / 03 August 2005
A growing GMB membership who work for DHL Express have voted yes in a consultative ballot for industrial action. The members are based in 140 depots across Great Britain (see list below). GMB will now move to make the position official by holding an official strike ballot in support of the pay claim. Any industrial action is likely to be scheduled in the run up to the Christmas shopping rush which for the parcel delivery industry starts during September.
GMB have been seeking talks with the company on this and a range of other issues, to date with no avail.
DHL have depots at the following locations: Aberdeen, Basildon, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Chessington, Croydon, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Exeter, Flint, Gatwick, Gibraltar, Glasgow, Guernsey, Harlow, Heathrow, Hemel Hempstead, Inverness, Ipswich, Isle of Man, Jersey, Leeds, Liverpool, London(City of London, Docklands, London North West, Vauxhall), Londonderry, Maidstone, Manchester, Newcastle, Newport, Northampton, Oxford, Reading, Sheffield, Southampton, Stoke on Trent, Swindon, Teesside, Telford, Tewkesbury. For the addresses of these locations, check the website: www.dhl.co.uk
Mick Rix, GMB National Executive Officer, said: “This consultative ballot result shows overwhelmingly that GMB members at DHL Express are up for a fight over the low pay and rotten working conditions that they have put up with up to now. That stance is finished as from now. I urge DHL management to get back to the negotiating table. My phone is on and I am available for talks at any time.”

Notes to editor:
As well as the unacceptable 3% pay increase, other issues are:
The reduction in overtime rate
The lowering of franchise rates by 5% for self employed drivers
The lack of facilities for GMB shop stewards
The need to improve health and safety practices and procedures
