Road Transport Working Time Regulations

Return to main [news page]

Date / 12 August 2005

I am appealing for any feedback into how the new Road Transport Regs (which came into force in April 2005) are working for LGV Drivers in any of your companies.

1) Has anyone had to sign a collective agreement to

Extend the reference period for the average 48 hour working time limit up to 26 weeks or to

Exceed the 10 hour limit for night work

2) How have periods of availability been built in? How are these working? Are these paid or unpaid?

3) What has been the level of understanding of the new Regulations amongst workers or managers?

4) Are there any areas that you need more information on? Have you been briefed by any of your companies?

5) Have companies seen this as a huge financial cost for them?

6) Have wage rates increased significantly to compensate for loss in working hours?

7) Are there any other altered working arrangements for drivers or their crew?

8) Have more drivers been employed by companies? If so, are these permanent or temporary?

I would be grateful for any feedback from any Officers on how this has worked (or not) as the TUC has asked for a review of the Regulations in the light of practical experience and we need to have some good case studies we can use for this.

There is an area on the GMB Website that is available to all at the moment www.gmb.org.uk/transport We aim that once we get a more secure members area, more documents would be able to go online.

If it is easier to send me in any new agreements, please do so.
