Date / 12 May 2005
The GMB , today warned that its members who work in the delivery depots of Warrington, Manchester and Aylesford, Kent will be balloted for strike action in the next few weeks. The ballot is the latest action in a dispute over major changes at the two sites since Morrisons takeover of Safeways in 2004.
The 2000 GMB members at the two sites work in the warehouses or as drivers. The dispute is over proposed changes to their contracts to bring them into line with Morrisons terms and conditions following Morrisons recent takeover of Safeways. The company are introducing changes to agreed pay and conditions without prior discussions or negotiations with the GMB, the recognised union. Our members also fear that the depots are being run down and consequently their job security is in danger.
The Aylesford Depot at Beddow Way Aylesford Kent, delivers to Morrisons and ex Safeways stores all over the south east of England as far west as Southampton; up the east coast as far as Lowestoft and out to Reading in Berkshire.
The Warrington Depot at Hardwick Grange Woolston Warrington Cheshire delivers to Morrisons stores in the North West.
Jude Brimble, GMB National Officer responsible for the distribution drivers and warehouse staff said, “The company’s stance of refusing to talk to the GMB is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Our members are insisting that we make progress on the pay and conditions negotiations. A consultative ballot on strike action will be the next step. Unless constructive discussions start forthwith with the GMB, Morrisons customers can expect empty stores this summer.”
